Top 10 singles: April 2013

Welcome to my new monthly feature, the top 10 singles of the month – Chosen by myself, yet influenced by YOU!

As you may have seen today, I’ve asked you guys on Facebook and Twitter what your personal favourite songs of this month are. Whether by the biggest artist in the world or someone unknown, I want to know what new releases you have on repeat. So, be sure to watch out towards the end of every month in the future, or comment whenever on the message board, so you can give me your input on what everyone should be listening to, and your song choices could be included in the top 10 of that month!

Now, April has been an incredible month for releases and cutting it down to 10 has been difficult. The number 1 seemed to be a clear winner, but would you have chosen the same?

10
Work – Iggy Azalea

Although perhaps not to my personal taste, I can appreciate an artist about to blow up when I see one. 22 year old Iggy (real name Amethyst Kelly) is a rap artist from Australia, and Work is the first single taken from upcoming album The New Classic. Azalea has recently been the support act for UK artist Rita Ora’s tour, yet is now making a name for herself with this “bouncy hip-hop track” with a rather sexy video. I’m predicting some kind of upcoming butt-battle between Azaela and fellow cutie-with-a-booty, Miss Nicki Minaj, perhaps…

9
Attracting flies – AlunaGeorge

I can already feel you asking ‘who the hell is AlunaGeorge’, and I certainly had no clue either, but hit play and you’ll recognise the track within an instant. Attracting Flies is the follow up to the massive number 2 hit with Disclosure, White Noise, yet I much prefer this single. The electronic duo from London have been together for 4 years and their album Body Music is out in July.

8
Heart Attack – Demi Lovato

Fresh off the US X Factor judging panel, Disney princess Demi Lovato is back with the first single from her fourth studio album, Demi. Ditching the blonde locks and revisiting her dark roots, the song features a rocky Kelly Clarkson-esque sound, yet with Demi’s unique voice plastered over the top. I’m definitely a fan, and I look forward to the new album, released May 14th.

Hey Porsche – Nelly

I don’t think I know a single person that doesn’t like at least one Nelly track. I mean, c’mon, the amazing Work It with Justin Timberlake? Top 10 smash Ride Wit Me? That number 1 duet with Kelly Rowland? And of course, not forgetting the massive song that everyone still wants played at every party 11 years later; Hot In Herre? 38 year old Nelly is a hip-hop legend, and it’s good to have him back.

6
I Need Your Love – Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding

Don’t you just love them singles that really don’t interest you until you see the official video? That’s exactly what happened with I Need Your Love. Not being an Ellie Goulding fan or having much of an opinion on DJ Calvin Harris, this was just another club tune to me. However, the video is great and I think we can all come together and agree that Goulding and Harris make an ace on-screen couple!

5
#thatPOWER – will.i.am ft. Justin Bieber

Former Black Eyed Pea will.i.am certainly knows how to put out a great single that features one of the biggest stars in the world. Previously working with the likes of Britney Spears, Cheryl Cole and The Script, the 38 year old has now teamed up with teen sensation Justin Bieber with yet another catchy track. The top 10 hit is taken from the album #willpower, also released this month.

4
Sleepwalking – Bring Me The Horizon

If you read my April album of the month, you’ll know I couldn’t praise the latest album release from Sheffield metal band Bring Me The Horizon, so their latest single was of course going to make it in a top 10! The boys are currently touring around the UK, and shall be hitting London next week to play at Camden’s Koko on May 7th.

3
Still Into You – Paramore

Another band I have already recently praised, and my crazy love for this single has not yet faded. It’s also definitely one of those ‘watch the video and you love the track even more than you originally did’ songs. I mean, just look how adorable Hayley looks?! Paramore have hit huge success with their current self titled album, hitting number 1 all over the world including the UK and the US.

2
Fine China – Chris Brown

Let’s pretend Michael Jackson was still alive, he didn’t miraculously turn white, and he was thrown into mainstream 2013 – then we’d get this; Fine China. It’s been no secret that bad boy Chris Brown is heavily influenced by the King of Pop, yet this single is an outright tribute to the star. The music video is inspired by several of Wacko Jacko’s, including The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal and Beat It, and Brown’s vocals even mimic those of Jacksons. This is definitely my song of the summer.

Drum roll, please…

1
Get Lucky – Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams

Of course the number 1 is the highly anticipated return of French duo, Daft Punk. Within just days of release, this single broke records and flew straight into number 1’s across the world. It currently stands as the UK number 1 and I can’t see it budging anytime soon. This was the most suggested song when I asked you guys about this months releases, and I couldn’t agree more. This catchy upbeat dance pop track is a guaranteed to be played at any party, BBQ, and festival this year, and we’ll all be singing long. There’s not an official video yet, but if you’d like your dose of the ever-so-attractive Pharrell Williams (who is 40 years old, may I add…) then you can watch this short SNL advert version.

What’s been your favourite song this April?
