Pearl Jam is classic rock. Initially being the foremost torchbearers of grunge survival, Pearl Jam have earned their prestigious classic rock title through a decade of integrity, fan worshipping and, of course, pure unadulterated rock and roll.
Lightning Bolt defines and highlights Pearl Jam’s history and hall of fame with each track seeming to pick out the best of the best in their previous albums. It’s like a greatest hits but all brand new, does that make sense? Hear me out.
Kicking off with ‘Getaway‘ and ‘Mind your Manners’ (below), two ‘throw yourself around a mosh pit’ type tracks that salutes an early PJ Seattle style nineties grunge. “Sirens” and title track ”Lightning Bolt” are more 80’s power ballad but lead singer Eddie Vedder’s sultry, breathy and iconic vocals scream classic PJ. While the likes of Nickleback, Creed and many others take notes and tricks from this distinct style of vocals, Eddie Vedder started and still owns it.
Many of the songs on Lightning Bolt are folky, down tempo but still keep the melodic rock element that make Pearl Jam archetypal to classic rock. This band have no need for ‘shocking’ stunts, controversial music videos or international fame grabbing attention schemes- to the likes of many artists today- but are set in stone in classic rock hall of fame.
All in all, 7/10 for the 10 year milestone album, Lightning Bolt. You go Pearl Jam.
