With the sounds of Country music permeating in the UK after the success of the hit television series Nashville, people both within and outside the music business have been asking – where are Britain’s home-grown country stars? Ward Thomas may well be providing some of the answers.
Based in Hampshire, Ward Thomas are 20-year-old twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas. Brought up on a rural livestock farm from a family line that included artists and authors, the two sisters have had country music in their blood ever since they were introduced to the likes of Carrie Underwood, Johnny Cash, Dixie Chicks and Alison Krauss.
Written in its entirety in the UK (but recorded in Nashville with some assistance from country music’s finest – Bobby Blazier, Dan Dugmore and Chris Rodriquez) the duo’s debut album From Where We Stand blends an authentic Nashville country sound with British influences, boasting guest appearances from Grammy Award winner Michael Omartian and country superstar Vince Gill.
The album’s lead single ‘Push for the Stride’ is an uplifting country-pop track combining strident guitars, melodic piano and vibrant harmonies. The song’s lyrics follow that idealistic concept of following your dreams, but this country twist helps the girls to neatly side-step the cliché.
