Pussy Riot @ Village Underground

They’re the group of hardcore ladies that make headlines wherever they go and you’ll probably remember them being in the news way back in 2012 when they faced a jail sentence for ‘hooliganism.’ After they occupied The Park Stage at Glastonbury this weekend, Pussy Riot will perform a guerrilla gig at Village Underground this on Wednesday 1st July.

Zona.Media will be an “event for freedom, against war, discrimination and for support of political prisoners in Russia” and will feature performances from Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and his band, The Jack Wood (Tomsk, Siberia) and Scofferlane (Moscow).

In addition to featuring the music of Pussy Riot, Maria Alekhina will also be giving a public talk about Zona.Media, the NGO that Nadia and Maria formed on release from a Russian penal colony. Zona.Media (www.zona.media) intends to make visible the corrupt practices and human rights violations that take place in Russian prisons and other prisons around the world. It intends to undermine the process of bureaucratic consent that turns “anonymous citizen N into faceless prisoner K.”

Zona.Media also covers “a small fraction” of the persecution of people who attempt to defend civil and human rights face. ”It’s an honour to participate with Pussy Riot on this event tomorrow – they’re one of the most radical and uncompromising movements of punk,” says Thurston Moore.

Wednesday 1st July, £16 adv, 7pm doors.
