It’s been 2 years since the debut release from singer-songwriter Marika Hackman, and now the 24 year old is back with a new sound and horrendously relatable lyrics for all my homosexual sisters.
‘Boyfriend’ is a track that Marika describes as ‘payback for all those times I’ve been interrupted mid-snog by some seedy wanker asking to join in’, and it’s worlds apart from the folky soft sounds we heard on We Slept At Last in 2015.
Opening with the lyrics ‘I’ve got your boyfriend on my mind, I think you know she stayed with me last night’ this song then goes on to explore the ridiculous mindset of cheating “not counting” when it’s with the same sex.
Gay women are often – if not all the time – sexually objectified and not taken seriously, and Marika uses her own experiences to deliver this somewhat comical yet extremely fierce track. With the help of all-girl-band The Big Moon, ‘Boyfriend’ sounds like Swim Deep and Wolf Alice bumped uglies and I tell you one thing, I’m very here for it.
Marika Hackman plays this years Great Escape and End of the Road Festival. Information and tickets can be found via her website.
